Murano the small and beautiful island in the Venetian archipelago lies about a mile north of Venice and is famous for its glass making, particularly lampworking. It is the birth place of the wonderful murano glass chandeliers. It has been the home of the foremost glass makers of the world for several centuries. These murano glassmakers were the only ones in Europe that knew of how to make glass mirrors. And it is they who introduced major new technologies to glassmaking. Murano glass is known for its higher-quality, unmatched durability and superior finish that make the glass glisten with the unique shine of its own. Although decline set in during the eighteenth century, glassmaking is still the island’s main industry. Murano is still a major exporter of traditional products like mirrors and glassware, and its factories produce modern items such as faucet handles, glass lampshades, and electric chandeliers.  Recently more and more emphasis on art glass and souvenir trade targeted towards tourist.

Murano glass chandeliers are the coming together of two aspects that create something wonderful. On one side the glass chandeliers that were first made around 18 century, claiming lineage to wooden candle holders of 15th century. These glass chandeliers are the peak of a structure that has become equal with power, wealth and royalty. Chandeliers a decorative structure hanging from ceilings that has the main purpose of decorating the area it hangs on. It is a fine piece of craftsmanship that is more a statement of status than anything else. These glass chandeliers started to become famous in 18th century as glassmaking became cheaper. The reflective qualities of newly formed glass meant that with the right amount of design is possible to come up with chandeliers that give sophisticated patterns on the walls, ceiling and floor of any hall or room it hangs on. It was only a matter of time when the experts in murano glass trade began to experiment with making glass chandeliers. The quality of glassmaking and the creativity of the artisans meant that very soon murano chandeliers and glass chandeliers were almost synonyms. This led to major exports of murano glass chandeliers to other parts of Europe as well as the world.

These murano chandeliers are also known as murano crystal chandeliers. The distinct color of the glass had led to specialties in the form of black murano glass chandeliers, red murano glass chandeliers, and white murano glass chandeliers. If anyone ever refers to Venetian style chandeliers they are basically referring to chandeliers made in murano as well.

It is this combination that created the murano glass chandeliers. It is thus these murano glass chandeliers hold such a unique place in the word of glass chandeliers. It is why Murano glass chandeliers are so sought after by the true appreciate of chandeliers. It is why every household with high taste of house decor must have a murano glass chandelier throwing pattern around there home.

Will Murano Glass Chandeliers Survive?

Posted on April 12th, 2009 by admin in murano glass chandeliers | No Comments »

In a world were modern and sophisticated techniques are invented everyday to lighten up our homes there are many people who ask me is murano glass chandeliers going to survive as contemporary design or are they just going to be part of antique that only interest collectors. especially what about such designs as candle chandeliers.

My reply is always that a device remains in the heart of people if it can do two things. First it should be able to hold on to the image that people expect out of it. Second it has to be adapting to the changing needs of the people. Which can be done in two ways by either taking on new features or showing that the design itself can be used in any new format. I believe that murano glass chandeliers has done this remarkably well, therefore not only will it remain but all in all prosper as well.

The true reason behind this adaptability of murano glass chandeliers is that the method of designing them was perfected centuries of trial and error.
